The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has maintained that it is unperturbed by the decision of former President John Mahama to stage a return to contest the 2020 elections.
It insists the former president will be no match for the NPP even if he wins his party’s primaries to be flagbearer.

Acting Director of Communications for NPP, Yaw Adomako Barfi said the party was focused on delivering on its mandate and certain that former President Mahama’s decision would not affect its chances of winning the upcoming elections.

“We are not bothered at all, we are on sound footing doing the right things, Ghanaians are the best judges, we are not worried, they have a lot of arsenals on them, I’m assuring Ghanaians that we are not disturbed because we have the mandate and we need to deliver on the promises,” he stressed.

Former President Mahama last Thursday officially declared his intention to contest in the party’s presidential primaries despite leading the party to one of its worse election performances in 2016 while an incumbent president.

His decision, although anticipated, has left some party supporters surprised as they believe he needed not after the humiliating defeat.

Others have however declared their support for him and welcomed his decision, indicating that he is the best among the 11 flagbearer hopefuls to make a significant impression and possibly claim victory in the 2020 polls.

The 10 regional chairmen of the NDC also backed his candidature for election 2020 before the announcement, after a meeting at the time, issued a communiqué in which they urged the former President to consider running for the 2020 polls.

Ninety-four NDC Members of Parliament (MPs) out of the Minority Caucus of 106 also endorsed former President Mahama as the flagbearer for the 2020 polls prior to his announcement and welcomed the decision and promised to support his campaign. –
