NEW DAGBON PEACE INITIATIVE MUST SUCCEED

The Northern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs were reported yesterday to have initiated fresh moves aimed at resolving all chieftaincy problems in Dagbon.

The initiative dubbed, “the Dagbon Peace and Progress Now” is meant to pave way for absolute peace in the area for the needed development.

Mr. Salifu Saeed, the Northern Regional Minister was reported to have disclosed the renewed efforts to journalists after visiting some chiefs in Dagbon, as part of the process to bring an end to the protracted chieftaincy crisis in the area.

According to the Regional Minister, the initiative would bring together all stakeholders in the country including chiefs, youth groups, opinion leaders and eminent citizens of Dagbon on September 10, this year.

The revival of the peace talks must be welcome news to many Ghanaians who have looked forward to an amicable resolution of the crisis.

As a matter of fact, this new effort would reinvigorate the efforts already being made by a Committee of Eminent Chiefs headed by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu to resolve the matter.

Already the Committee has drafted a roadmap to address issues and has met severally with the antagonists, the Andani and Abudu Gates.

Even though the Committee’s mediation effects have been slow, the Times is of the view that some progress has been made, including the signing of a “memorandum of understanding to the roadmap to peace.”

It is for this reason that the Minister’s announcement of a renewed effort must be good news to Ghanaians, especially sons and daughters of Dagbon.

We should embrace the initiative, because governments have expended huge sums of money in Dagbon to maintain law and order at the expense of the numerous development projects the people of the area would have been enjoying. Indeed the area is further deprived because the conflict has scared investors away.

Aside, hundreds of lives have been lost over many decades due to this endless conflict.

We believe the only true way to resolve this hydra headed problem is through diplomacy, sincere deliberations, and some compromises from all parties involved.

Therefore, it is our prayers that the guns would remain silent as the renewed initiative kick-start. All hands must be on deck so that Dagbon can return to the heights of its glory.
