NDC elects new regions executives May 25

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) will on Saturday May 25 elect regional executives for the six new regions and April 11, as date for the opening of nominations for the positions.

The decision was arrived at a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting last Friday.

In a release signed and issued by the party’s General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, also outlined the guidelines and timetable to ensure a successful selection of the regional executives.

Ghana now has six new regions – Western North, Oti, Ahafo, Bono East, Savannah and North East following a referendum in December.

President Akufo-Addo has also presented the Constitutional Instruments to give legal backing for the regions and announced their capital.

The release said “the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the NDC in a meeting held in Accra on April 5, 2019, has approved the guidelines to govern the selection of Regional Executives in the regions affected by the creation of the new regions.

“All regional executives in the parent regions should remain in their positions except otherwise decided by the individual to move to a newly created region and where the executives decide to move to newly-created regions, they should resign their positions on or before April 9, 2019 in writing to the General Secretary copied to the Regional Chairman of the parent region.

“Resigned executives should assume their analogous positions in the newly-created regions as should be indicated in the resignation letter, such executives should not go through elections, unless they choose to contest for another vacant portfolio and all other vacancies that may be created as a result of the movements should be filled through elections to be conducted by the party.

“The Regional Executives of the parent regions should have oversight responsibility over the newly created regions until the new executives are sworn-in after the elections and the following timetable should apply in the conduct of the regional elections in the four parent regions and the six newly created regions to fill the vacancies.
“Opening of nominations from 11th to 13th April, filing of nominations from 22nd to 23rd April, vetting from 24th to 25th April, appeals from 26th to 29th April, final notice of poll on 2nd May 2, 2019 and elections on May 25, 2019,” the release said
