National security man gunned down

Armed robbers on Saturday shot and killed a National Security officer on the Walewale-Gambaga  trunk road, in the East Mamprusi district of the Northern Region.

The Northern Regional Police Public Relation Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ebenezer Tetteh, who disclosed this to the Ghanaian Times in an interview yesterday, gave the identity of the deceased as Martin Wuni.

He said Wuni, 45, was in the company of a Naval officer travelling to Gambaga when armed robbers attacked them.

ASP Tetteh said the armed robbers mounted a road block with the intention to rob passengers, but the two men who were in a Toyota Rave 4, ignored the signal by the robbers to stop.  The robbers shot at them, resulting in the death of Wuni.

ASP Tetteh said the other officer managed to escape into the nearby community unhurt.

He said the Naval officer reported the incident to the police who accompanied him to the scene where they found the body of Wuni.

The PRO said the body of the deceased had been deposited at the Tamale Teaching Hospital mortuary for autopsy.

He stated that police have intensified search for the said armed robbers in the area and appealed to the communities along the road to assist police in their investigations.

ASP Tetteh urged residents to report suspicious characters in their vicinity to the police.
