The Yendi Municipal Security Committee has ordered the cancelation of the celebration of the Damba festival within the Yendi municipality and its surrounding communities.
The committee, upon series of deliberations, came to the conclusion that this year’s Damba festival celebration should be called off following the minor disturbances in the area after the general elections
The MUSEC, therefore, pleaded with the Regent of Dagbon, Kampakuya-Na Yakubu Abdulai Andani, and his elders to cancel the celebration of Damba in the Dagbon traditional area.
A statement signed and issued by the Registrar of the Dagbon Traditional Council, Mohamed Adam Gariba, said based on the advice by the Yendi MUSEC, the council had directed all its members to cancel the celebration.
“In consultation with the custodians of Dagbon, Kampakuya-Na Yakubu Abdulai Andani has directed me to humbly inform our revered Nanima and the general public that the remaining activities of the 2016 Damba festival has been called off,” the statement said, adding that the move was to prevent any trouble in the area.
The Registrar said it was important to protect security in the Yendi township and its surrounding communities and stressed that nothing should be done to compromise the current peace the area was enjoying.
He entreated all and sundry, particularly the chiefs, to adhere to the orders of the MUSEC urging them to assist and collaborate with the security agencies within their jurisdiction to ensure peace and unity in the traditional area.
Since the murder of the Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Na Yakubu Andani the celebration of Damba in the Dagbon traditional area had always been on and off.
