MTN-FA Cup to take off Jan. 28

THIS year’s MTN FA Cup is scheduled to kick off on January 28, according to the FA Cup Committee (FACC).

The oldest club competition will begin with the preliminary round of matches which involves clubs in the lower division.

After the preliminary round, the 16 clubs in the premier league will join 48 clubs from the lower tier to battle for the prestigious trophy.

The start of the MTN FA Cup had been delayed due to the well documented legal tussle between the Ghana Football Association and King Faisal which placed an injunction on the Congress of the GFA.

The court recently gave the GFA permission to hold its congress paving the way for the start of the MTN FA Cup.

Kotoko won the title last season after beating Inter Allies in the grand finale.

In arelated development, ,the Referees Association of Ghana is to organize a two day intensive workshop for local referees expected to officiate in the upcoming 2014/15 league and MTN/FA Cup season at the Ghanaman Center of Soccer Excellence at Prampram.

The exercise which is expected equip Premier League referees for the upcoming season is supposed to commence January 14 and end on January 17.

According to FIFA referee a William Agbovi, the first batch of the Premier league referees will report at Prampram by 7:00 am on Wednesday, January 14 and close at 6pm on January 15 while the 2nd batch is expected to report at 7:00am on January16 and close at 6:00 pm on January 17.

Forty-five (45) Premier league referees are expected to take part in the exercise.sportscrusader.com.

Meanwhile, league champions Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of oak showed their superiority over second division sides as they walloped them eight and five goals to nothing respectively at the Adako Jackie Park and Akosombo over the weekend.

Kotoko whipped division One side, Galaxy Stars 8-0 through goals from Obed Owusu, who joined the club from Berekum Chelsea, Jordan Opoku, Richard Mpong, Sadat Wahab, Atta Kusi, Dauda Mohammed scored two goals and the last goal came from Elvis.

Hearts on the other hand gained an away victory thrashing home team Crystal Palace by five goals to nil at Akosombo.

Emmanuel Hayford got the curtain raiser in the 11 minute, before he doubled the scoreline in the 17 minute. Gilbert Fiamenyo put his name on the score sheet in the 24 minute to make the scoreline three nil in favour of the Phobians and again added another one to make it four goals to nothing, with the new kid on the block Kwame Kizito sealing the doom of Crystal Palace in the 55 minute.

The Ghana premier league commences on Sunday 18 January after going on hibernation since June. Kotoko will take on Aduana Stars at Dormaa, while Hearts of Oak will engage WAFA at Kpando due to 2-match home ban handed to the Phobians by the disciplinary Committee.
