Mmdces Charged To Be Innovative

Mr Julius DebrahJulius Debrah, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development has charged Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to be innovative in mobilising resources to enhance community development.

Speaking at the extra-ordinary National Delegates Conference of the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG), he said well thought through revenue generation strategies backed by proper planning would help local authorities deliver on their development mandate.

He expressed worry about the over reliance on transfers from central government including the Common Fund saying, such funds are now hampered by delays in their releases.

The Minister urged executives of NALAG to take decisions that would go a long way to strengthen the Association so that such decisions would have a positive impact on the activities of District Assemblies.

He asked them to embrace the Private Public Partnership (PPP) and look beyond the borders of the country to improve on the financial fortunes of the association.

He asked the new executives to use the platform to exchange ideas and also share experiences with the objective of further deepening the decentralised and local government process.

Mr. Debrah advised the new executives to be guided by commitment to lead the association to facilitate its effectiveness.

“As a ministry, we shall continue to support and closely collaborate with NALAG to achieve its goals as a common voice of all MMDAs in the country,” he said.

The General Secretary of NALAG, Mrs. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, said the future of the association is bright, saying, with conscious effort, the association would rebrand itself and work towards achieving a positive image.—GNA
