The Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) have been asked to sponsor the youth in their jurisdictions for skills training.

It should also be part of their human development effort and in keeping with the government’s agenda of improving the lives of all.

Mr. Ziblim Shaibu, Northern Regional Director of the National Youth Authority (NYA), who made the appeal at a symposium in Tamale to mark this year’s International Youth Day said it would help the youth to engage in self-employable activities to earn a living.

The International Youth Day, celebrated on August 12 every year by member states of the United Nations, showcases and reflects on the role of young people on the development of their communities.

This year’s regional event, on the theme, ‘Investing in youth health for poverty eradication and sustainable livelihood’, was sponsored by the United Nations Population Fund.

Mr. Shaibu said the NYA had come out with the National Youth Policy and its implementation plan to help advance the course of the youth.

He appealed to stakeholders to consider youth development in their scheme of affairs.

“We have a youth leadership and skills training institute at Nalerigu in the East Mamprusi District, and we appeal for support and sponsorship to train more youths to acquire employable skills,” he said.

The Regional Minister, Mr. Abdallah Abubakari, whose speech was read on his behalf, stressed the need for the youth to acquire skills to add value to their lives.

Mrs. Esther Boateng, Regional Head of Action Aid, urged the youth to take advantage of existing opportunities to upgrade their skills to enhance productivity.  GNA
