Mentally-ill man discharged from Ankaful prison

A mentally challenged person, Awal Mohammed, who was mistakenly detained at Ankaful Prison in Cape Coast since November last year, was yesterday discharged under the Justice for All  Programme (JFAP).

A special court presided by Court of Appeal Court Judge and Chairman of the Remand Review Taskforce, Justice C. k Honyenugah, said it was unfortunate he was detained for misdemeanor, and unconditionally discharged him from prison.

Mohammed, who was arrested and arraigned at Tema District Court for assault, pleaded guilty to the offence with the explanation that his cousins were teasing him and he became angry and assaulted them.

However, the court suspected that Mohammed was mentally ill, and ordered that he should be sent to Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital in Cape Coast for medical examination and care, and to periodically report to the court.

However, the police mistakenly detained at Ankaful prison without trial.
