‘Mental health care needs support from all sectors’

Dr. Akwasi Osei, Chief Executive Officer of the Mental Health Authority, has called for collaborative support from all stakeholders towards improving mental health care in the country.

Such support, he said, would ensure the effective implementation of the new Mental Health Act, 2012 (Act 846) aimed at improving the mental health care system to meet international standards.
Dr Osei made the call when the Beautiful Minds and Wellness Foundation presented assorted items to the inmates at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital.

According to him, about 98 per cent of the mental patients were not getting the right attention and treatment, and therefore were subjected to human rights abuses such as chaining, flogging and denial of food.

He was optimistic that the establishment of the a mental health fund would ensure the effective decentralised funding for health and welfare support activities for mental patients at the regional and district levels.
