Melcom Group donates towards GJA’s 24th awards and 70th anniversary

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has received assorted items and shopping vouchers from Melcom Group of Companies to support its 24th awards and 70th anniversary.

The items include two Digital Satellite Televisions, boxes of fruit juice, alcoholic beverages, soft drinks, spirits and wines among others.

Speaking at a short ceremony held yesterday in Accra, the Director of Communications of the Melcom Group of Company, Mr Godwin Avenorgbo, explained that the donation formed part of the corporate social responsibility of his outfit.

He promised Melcom’s commitment to continue supporting GJA to promote professionalism and ensure people’s right and freedom are protected in the country.

Mr Avenorgbo observed that journalists need support in order to discharge their duties effectively, hence the items were  meant to support the winners of the awards.

He condemned attacks on journalists and called on the association to protect them to enable the citizenry to be abreast with development.

Mr Kofi Yeboah, General Secretary of the GJA, receiving the items thanked Melcom for the assistance and promised it would be used for its intended purpose.

Mr Yeboah said that the association was working assiduously to deal with attacks on journalists in order to protect and promote media democracy.

He also stressed the need for journalists to develop themselves, saying “there is the need for continuous professional training for journalists to be cognisant with technology and other technical know-how to make them compete effectively with foreign journalists.”

The President of the GJA, Roland Affail Monney lauded Melcom for their strategic partnership with the media.

He called on other corporate entities to support GJA to award hardworking journalists in the country and urged individuals to be at Kempinski Hotel on November 24 for the ceremony.
