Medeama draw in Tanzania

TANZANIA’s Young Africans hopes of a semis berth went up in flames after visiting Medeama of Ghana held them to a 1-1 draw in their Group A Day 3 fixture on Saturday in Dar es Salaam.

Yanga remains at the foot of the table with just a point after three games after previous defeats to MO Bejaia and TP Mazembe of Algeria and DR Congo respectively. Medeama are third place with two points.

The homers started the game on a blistering note and scored the opener barely two minutes into the fixture through striker Donald Ngoma. Medeama stayed calm and recorded their first shot on target four minutes later, courtesy Abbas Mohammed before Bernard Danso levelled on 18 minutes.

The Ghanaian side were impressive but saw efforts from Kwame Boahene after Kwesi Donsu had put him through on the quarter-hour mark go in vain.

Yanga tried to restore the lost lead but Thaaban Kamusoko and Amissi Tambwe shot wide from chances easier to score than miss.

The seemingly goal curse on the host team reared its ugly head again 10 minutes before the interval as new recruit Obrey Chirwa failed to connect with only Medeama shot-stopper, Daniel Agyei at his mercy after meandering his way past the defence.

Burundian-import Tambwe missed a sitter three minutes after the break after a poor marking by Medeama captain Paul Aidoo, but the former who netted 21 goals in all competitions last season failed to make the chance count.

Medeama also had their fair share of opportunities but lacked composure in the on Yanga final-third.

As the game wore on, Yanga made two substitutions in the last quarter-hour with Juma Mahadhi and Haruna Niyonzima replacing Tambwe and Oscar Joshua whilst the Ghanaians brought on Malik Akowua for Enock Agyei.

Mahadhi almost found the back of the net with his first touch of the ball, but was denied by Medeama goalie Agyei, who was unarguably Man-of-the-match.

Striker Mohamed should have ensured the maximum points was in the kitty of the visitors on the stroke of time, but shot wide in what was clearly his side’s best chance of the game.

Medeama will host Yanga in a Day 4 fixture on Tuesday, July 26 2016 in the western Ghanaian port city of Sekondi. – Cafonline
