Match halted over shooting

Sunday’s Uruguayan Primera Division clash between Penarol and Rampla Juniors has been suspended after a shooting in one of the Estadio Centenario toilets.

The match was already in action when an unidentified man was attacked in the restroom located near Gate 10 of the stadium, in the Amsterdam Stand.

After receiving gunshot injuries to his arms and legs, the individual was taken to Montevideo’s Hospital de Clinicas for treatment.

Police sources indicated to El Pais that they believed the clash was related to an internal battle between Penarol barra brava hooligans over the sale of drugs.

The game initially continued, with Rampla leading 1-0 away from home, but at half-time security authorities made the decision to halt proceedings.

The episode is the latest in a series of violent outbursts that have shaken Uruguayan football, after a group of Penarol fans were fired at by Nacional hooligans in September during an event in Canelones leaving three injured.
