Maritime stakeholders must accept gov’t intervention — MOTI

maritime pixStakeholders in the maritime industry have been urged to accept government policies aimed at improving services at the country’s ports instead of rejecting interventions.

Mr Nasir Ahmed Yartey, the Deputy Communications Manager at the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MOTI), said stakeholders must have a common ground with government on the intended implementation of the Ghana Conformity Assessment Programme (G-Cap) and the Advance Shipment Information (ASHI) programme.

Mr. Yartey made the call on Wednesday during a day’s interaction between journalists and Ship Owners and Agents Association (SOAAG) in Tema.

Mr Yartey said it was unfortunate that even though stakeholders always call for government’s intervention to simplify port procedures, the same people reject those polices.

He stated that, the G-Cap and ASHI were designed and geared towards improving the procedures at the sea ports, adding that, they may have some unfavourable areas.

He urged stakeholders to appreciate the intervention and point out the specific unfavourable areas and give constructive recommendations to help improve the system of operations in the maritime sector.

“We have to come together and get a common ground instead of sticking to our stand,” he stressed.

Madam Perpetual Osei-Bonsu, the Executive Secretary of the SOAAG, said her outfit organised the seminar to educate journalists on the maritime issues.

Mad. Osei-Bonsu pleaded with the media to always seek the other side of the stories involving the operations of SOAAG in order to properly inform the public.

Mr. Roland Affil Monney, the President of the Ghana Journalists Association, commended the organisers for building the capacity of journalists reporting from the sea ports.

He reminded journalists to maximise every training opportunity to sharpen their skills and reflect on the quality of stories written especially in the maritime industry
