Fernandinho expects a reaction from Brendan Rodgers’ men following their 7-0 drubbing by Barcelona and says City must be wary at Celtic Park.
The Brazilian midfielder also dismissed talk that City are overwhelming favourites because of their perfect-10 start to the season.
“I don’t agree with that, I don’t agree with us being favourites,” he said. “It’s going to be a difficult game.
“Of course, they had a painful defeat for themselves and the fans, but maybe that’s one of the reasons they will step onto the pitch with a lot more concentration, motivated to try to win this home game.
“So we’ll have to be very careful and stay very focused to not allow that to happen.”
Fernandinho beat Celtic with Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League in 2007 and remembers how they defeated holders AC Milan during that group-stage campaign to reach the last 16.
“It will be my first time playing in Scotland, against Celtic,” he said. “I played them once in 2007, but that was in our stadium – I was suspended for the away game.
“It will be special because all the best teams are in the Champions League. So our objective is to go there and try to win, but it’s going to be a difficult match.”
Fernandinho also played down claims the group is a straight shoot-out between City and Barcelona.
Manchester City’s title collapse is added motivation this season, says Bacary Sagna
“I think people sometimes say that City and Barcelona are the favourites,” he said.
“But I don’t agree with that because Borussia Moenchengladbach are an excellent team and Celtic are an excellent team as well, especially when they play at home.
“You always have to be careful. You always have to think that you cannot make any mistakes. There’s no relaxing, otherwise you’ll pay for it.”
