Man murdered over ownership of ‘galamsey’ site

Vasco Osei Kojo, 26-year-old illegal miner, popularly known as ‘galamseyer,’   was on Sunday, allegedly murdered in cold blood at Akango, a  farming community,  in  the Ellembelle District of the Western Region.

According to the  police, Osei suffered a deep cut behind the right ear, after one Kwalekwale, also a galamseyer, ‘butchered’ him with cutlass during a scuffle over a galamsey site at Akango.

The body has been deposited at the Tarkwa Hospital for preservation, awaiting post mortem examination.

Kwalekwale is on the run, while a witness, Samuel Cofie, 19, also known as Atisco, from Osei’s group, has been arrested as part of investigations into the case.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP)

Olivia Ewurabena Adiku, confirmed the incident to The Ghanaian Times.

She said that at  about 10.15am, on Sunday, Daniel  Amakye, from Salman,

reported to the police that, Osei, his nephew, who was allegedly  ‘butchered’  by a

fellow galamseyer in the  morning,  was rushed to the  Salman Health Centre  but,

died shortly  on arrival.

ASP Adiku said, reports indicated that on the night of Saturday, Osei’s group went to their galamsey site to work and closed in the morning of Sunday.

The Police PRO said that when the  opposing group heard  of the  ‘nocturnal’ activities of  Osei’s group, one  Kwalekwale, also  galamseyer,  during a   scuffle  with Osei, chased  the deceased and  inflicted cutlass wounds  on him.

“The corpse had been deposited at the Tarkwa mortuary for further investigations. Meanwhile, Cofie is also in custody assisting police,” ASP Adiku said.

An elder at the Salman palace, Mr. Abraham Kwofie, explained   that the conflict between the galamseyers was about competition over land on a mining concession belonging to Adamus Resources, adding “it was about who is first to discover gold ore”.

Meanwhile, the wife of Osei, Madam Gifty Agborzo, who has two children with the deceased, told journalists yesterday that two men informed her of the husband’s death at Salma on Sunday morning.
