Man killed in fire at Ashaiman

fireA 55-year-old lotto operator, Kweku Petey, popularly known as Columbus, died in the early hours of Monday when fire engulfed a wooden kiosk which he is occupying at Old Tulaku, in Ashaiman.

The cause of the fire was unknown, but residents suspected that it might have been caused by a mosquito coil or candle lighted by him.

Speaking to The Ghanaian Times, Mr. Felix Bawah, a steel bender who is a close neighbour of Petey, said at about 3am, he heard a loud noise and when he came out of his room, he saw the lotto kiosk in which the deceased slept, on fire.

He said the inhabitants used water and sand to quench the fire before they discovered the charred body of Petey in the debris.

Mr. Bawah said Petey had become bedridden for some time now and that might have accounted for his inability to escape from the kiosk.

He said the Ghana National Fire Service had visited the fire scene, to assess the situation and to commence investigation into the incident.

The Crime Officer for the Ashaiman District Police, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Emmanuel Tetteh Yarkah, confirmed the incident to The Ghanaian Times, and said the body had been deposited at the Police Hospital Mortuary in Accra.
