Man gets 5 years for attacking 102-year-old woman

Accra Circuit Court ‘One’ has sentenced a graphic designer, who attacked a 102-year-old woman at Teshie, in the Greater Accra Region, to five years imprisonment in hard labour.

The convict, Mawuli Mensah Joel, 27, in a bid to rob Madam Leticia Osabukele in a toilet at about 7:30pm on March 7, 2019, pushed her down and sat on her, resulting in a fracture on her leg.

Mr Aboagye Tandoh, who presided the case considered Mensah’s conduct quite reprehensible, and sentenced him yesterday to serve as a deterrent.

The convict would reappear before the same court on April 1, to stand trial on the first charge of “attempting to commit crime”, which he had denied.

The court, however, convicted him for pleading guilty to the second charge of “causing harm” to the centenarian.

Chief Inspector W.K. Boateng, the prosecutor, said that Mensah, who also lived at Teshie with the victim, attacked her (victim) in a toilet located not far from her room, and tried to remove money she had tied around her waist.

Prosecution told the court that the old woman shouted for help, but the convict covered her mouth with his hand, preventing her from calling for help.

Chief Insp Boateng said that the convict pushed the victim down violently, sat on her and in the process fractured her leg.

He said Mensah took a broken tile and attempted to harm the complainant, but on seeing someone (witness) rushing to save the old woman, Mensah scaled the complainant’s fence wall and escaped.

According to Chief Insp Boateng, Madam Osabukele was given a medical form to attend the 37 Military Hospital after lodging a complaint with the police.

He said that she was admitted, treated and discharged, and Mensah was arrested and charged with two counts of attempting to commit crime and causing harm.
