Man dies after being hit by ‘trotro’

A 42-year-old man died when he was knocked down by a mini bus at John Teye on the Accra-Nsawam highway.

The deceased, identified as Benjamin Addo was hit by an Urvan vehicle with registration number GS 4645-09 driven by Ernest Obeng, 39.

Obeng, who is in police custody assisting in investigations, was driving from Pokuase to Achimota when the accident occurred.

The Commanding Officer of the Amasaman Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU), Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Francis Numado confirmed the story to the Ghanaian Times in Accra yesterday.

He said on January 7, at about 7:30p.m., the ‘trotro’ driver who was from Pokuase to Achimota knocked down Addo, who was believed to be drunk whilst crossing the road at John Teye junction.

DSP Numado said the driver rushed him to the 37 Military Hospital but was pronounced dead the following day.

He said Obeng later reported the case to the Amasaman MTTU who detained him to assist in investigations.

The Commander said he had been given provisional charge for negligently causing harm, and would be put before court soon.
