Man beats up 2 policemen

Suspect Daniel Achila,arrested for assulting the police officersTWO policemen of the Amasaman District Police Command, were brutally assaulted by a 40-year-old man at an accident scene on the Nsawam highway on Wednesday, leaving them with bruises.

Chief Inspector Kofi Okyere was punched in the mouth, while Sergeant Martin Awimtrim was given a head-butt, resulting in a cut on the lower lip and a swollen face respectively.

They reported to the Amasaman Municipal Hospital, where they were treated and discharged.

The suspect, Daniel Achila, a water pumping operator, was asked by the policemen to leave the accident scene for a rescue operation, but he refused, ending up in an argument between them.

Achila then assaulted the policemen in the ensuing confrontation, and was arrested.

The Amasaman Motor Traffic and Transport Department Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Amoako Boansi, who corroborated the story to The Ghanaian Times in Accra yesterday, said on February 18 at about 8 a.m., Achila, now in police custody, was reported to have punched Chief Inspector Okyere’s   mouth.

He said when Sergeant Awim-trim attempted to intervene, he was also head-butted by the suspect.

He said Achila would be put before court for assaulting public officers.

The Commander said on that fateful day, a driver was trapped in an accident involving three vehicles on the ACP Junction on the Nsawam Highway.

He said a filled fuel tanker was involved, and so the policemen asked the crowd to leave the scene for a rescue operation.

ASP Boansi said, the directive did not go down well with him, and he attacked the police officers without any provocation.
