The police has arrested a 27-year-old man, Danny Gblonya, for allegedly hacking into an Internet Service Provider portal and stealing data bundle worth GH¢115,000.00.

The suspect was said to have hacked into the system for the past three months, and fraudulently allocated the bundle to some customers.

The Director of the Cyber Crime Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Chief Superintendent ( Chief Sup) Dr Gustav Yankson, who confirmed the arrest to the Ghanaian Times in Accra, said the suspect has been granted police enquiry bail whiles investigations were ongoing.

He said On May 7, an Internet service provider (name withheld) reported to the Cybercrime Unit of the CID headquarters that their online portal where customers purchase data bundles was hacked and data bundle worth Ghȼ115,000.00 fraudulently allocated to some customers.

Chief Supt Dr Yankson said the suspect was arrested on May 10, at Dansoman in Accra, following preliminary investigations that revealed the identity of the intruder.

He said further investigations revealed that the suspect purchased eight data Subscriber Identity Module(SIM) cards of the service provider, allotted data bundles to them through the portal without authority and sold same out to friends at cheaper prices.

Chief Sup Dr Yankson indicated that police investigations also revealed that suspect used software that ‘spies’ on the backend codes of the website identified vulnerability and exploited it.

He said suspect has admitted to the offence during interrogation and he would be arraigned on charges of unauthorised circumvention and stealing.

Chief Sup Dr Yankson appealed to individuals and companies to to regularly go through their websites to identify such vulnerability.
