Man 23, Jailed 8yrs

Violence Court yesterday   sentenced a 23-year old man to eight years imprisonment in hard labour, for defiling a teenager.

Michael Lankwei Odartey, pleaded guilty to the charges of causing unlawful harm and defilement and was convicted accordingly.

He is said to have taken advantage of the drunken 14 year-old girl and forcibly had sex with her.

Prosecuting, Inspector Kofi Atimbire, told the court, presided over by Sedina Agbemava that the complainant is the father of the victim, while convict is a resident of Teshie, a suburb of Accra.

According to him, the victim lives with her uncle at Teshie in the same neighbourhood with the convict.

On May 2, 2014, the victim went to the beach with her friends.

On her way home, the victim then drunk, met the convict who took advantage of her, dragged her into a friend’s wooden structure and forcibly had sex with her.

Victim later woke up and found herself naked with convict lying beside her but kept the ordeal to herself.

However, on May 31, 2014, at about 2:00 p.m., victim was in the company of a friend in a different wooden structure when the convict walked there and asked her friend to leave.

Moment after the friend left, he demanded for sex but the victim refused.

Then convict pulled a knife and threatened to stab her if she did not succumb to his demand.

A struggle ensued between them and convict stabbed her in the left hand.

Victim’s uncle got wind of the incident, quickly rushed to the scene and arrested the convict and handed him over to the Nungua Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU).

A medical form was issued to the complainant to take the victim to the hospital.

Convict admitted the offence in his caution statement and was consequently arraigned before court.   By Malik Sullemana
