Madagascar to hold presidential run-off vote

Madagascar’s two former presidents, Andry Rajoelina and Marc Ravalomanana, will contest in a presidential run-off vote next month, the country’s High Constitutional Court (HCC) announced yesterday.

“The two candidates eligible to run in the second round of the election of the President of the Republic are: Mr. Andry Nirina Rajoelina and Mr. Marc Ravalomanana,” said HCC President Jean Eric Rakotoarisoa while announcing the final results of the first round vote.

Rajoelina said he was ready for the second round vote scheduled for December 19, and asked the Independent National Election Commission (INEC) to improve its credibility by improving the organisation of the vote and the treatment of the results.

Ravalomanana made his point through his spokesperson Hanitra Razafimanantsoa, saying, “We are ready for the second tour and ask the INEC to improve its manners of working.”

Ravalomanana, 69, was elected president from 2002 to 2009, while Rajoelina, 44, was president of transition from 2009 to 2013.

The electoral campaign for the second round will begin on December 3 for 15 days. -Xinhua
