Lebanese Community to extend scholarship to Arts students

PThe Lebanese Community has announced plans to extend its flagship scholarship initiative to other academic disciplines being pursued by students.

Lebanese Ambassador to Ghana, Maher Kheir made the announcement when he awarded full scholarships to some 15 students from the Faculty of Law at the University of Ghana last Thursday.

The new initiative will add to the current scholarship package being run for journalism students and law students from the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ), the University of Ghana and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

Speaking to the Ghanaian Times, Mr Kheir disclosed that the Arts had enormous potential in inspiring unity, tolerance and love which were necessary values for humanity and nation building.

He added that, the Lebanese community was committed to supporting many more Ghanaian students within the tertiary bracket hence the need to widen the net to include other subject areas.

“The Embassy of Lebanon, for five successive years in collaboration with the Lebanese community is proud to promote together the vision to make tertiary education accessible to many Ghanaian students,” he said.

He noted “we will do more to support Ghanaian students across all levels.”

He added that the scholarship scheme “has been extremely successful. But we refuse to rest on our efforts as long as there are more students out there to be reached. For this reason, we are working to extend the scholarship scheme to other tertiary institutions and other disciplines.”

According to him, upholding the rule of law is crucial in strengthening Ghana’s growing democracy. He, therefore, urged the students to be good examples of the law saying“Without law, men are beasts. If so, then be the beauty of the law, not its beasts.”

On his part, the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Professor Kofi Quashigah, said that, the Lebanese scholarship programme was a laudable initiative which continued to enrich Ghana’s justice system.

“Since the introduction of the scholarship package, more of our students have been motivated to work harder. It’s not just about the money. It’s about the honour that comes with being enrolled on the programme.”

He urged the beneficiaries to continue to work harder to help build a better judicial system for the country.

Director of Public Affairs at the University, Stella Amoa said the programme had deepened Ghana-Lebanon relations which had seen monumental growth in recent times.

She expressed gratitude for the gesture and urged the Embassy and the Lebanese community to continue supporting students in the country to ensure quality education.

The Lebanese scholarship programme which is an initiative of the Lebanese community in Ghana is aimed at complementing government’s efforts in making quality education more accessible to many Ghanaian students at different levels in the sector.
