Late Korea DPR earns valuable win over Mexico

A late header from Kim Kyong-Yong gave Korea DPR a much-needed 2-1 victory over Mexico in their second Group B encounter at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup France 2018 yesterday.

The win gave them a major boost ahead of the last group matches as all four teams stand a chance of qualification to the next stage of the championship.

Fans at the Stade du Clos Gastel in Dinan-Lehon were treated to a pair of early goals, with Mexico taking the lead through Jacqueline Ovalle’s third goal of France 2018.

Left unmarked at the top of the Korea DPR box, she took Kimberly Rodriguez’s free-kick pass from the right and drilled a low shot past Korea DPR goalkeeper Kim Yong-Sun.

The lead lasted just two minutes as the defending champions replied with a well-taken strike on the left side of the Mexico box by Choe Kum-Ok. Her rising finish eluded the outstretched arms of Emily Alvarado in the Mexico goal.

Numerous chances were traded at both ends after the break, but it was the reigning champions that found the decisive breakthrough on the 85th minute when Kim Kyong-Yong headed home An Kuk-Hyang’s fine cross from the left.

The result leaves Group B with all four teams in a position to make the quarter-finals after their final group matches on Sunday August 12.
