Lapaz cop killing: 15 including 6 Nigerians arrested

Fifteen suspects, made up of six Nigerians, nine Ghanaians, including a woman, have been arrested in connection with the Abeka Lapaz shooting, which resulted in the death of a policeman, and injury to another personnel.

The suspected Nigerians are Ken Ikponnwosa, 23, Faith Ogieriakhi, 35, Fem Erhuumwunse,20, Micheal Ogbegia, 20,Sampson Aja, 27, Emmanuel Aimiu, 31.

The Ghanaians are Kwasi Nyarko, 33, Rapheal Nii Lartey Coffie,37, Asara Frederick,35,Mark Enchil, 31, Kwadwo Afari, 32,Kwabena Gyasi,20,Charity Otuboa, 27, Abudu Mohammed and Sanusi Zibo.

They were separately arrested upon a tip off on Saturday at Kasoa, in the Central region, Ablekuma and Ollebu during an operation by a combined team from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters and the Greater Accra Regional Police Command.

This followed the shooting of the two policemen on Thursday afternoon, in which one of the policemen died, while the other is on admission at the Police Hospital in Accra

All the suspects are being screened to establish their involvement in the shooting at the time of going to press.

The Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP), Osabarima Oware Asare Pinkro III told The Ghanaian Times in Accra yesterday that the suspects were in the custody of the police assisting in investigations.

He said investigations conducted by the police led to the discovery of the abandoned Hyundai Elantra car at Ollebu, a suburb of Accra, which the suspects hijacked at Abeka Lapaz, and used it to escape, after the incident.

Earlier, he said the police had also retrieved two Motorola sets, which belonged to the policemen at the crime scene, adding that other items retrieved, included four empty shells and an unregistered motorcycle.

Last Thursday, July 13,  at about 12:30pm, two policemen Constable Daniel Owusu (deceased) and Constable Alhassan Jibrine from the Community Policing Department Headquarters, who were on patrol duties within Abeka Lapaz area. were shot by unidentified men, who were on an unregistered motorcycle.

The suspects abandoned their motorbike and snatched an unregistered Hyundai Elantra Saloon car and sped off towards Mallam Junction.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) subsequently, placed a GH¢10,000 bounty on the head of the suspects for information that can lead to the arrest of the suspects.
