A 35-year-old labourer, was yesterday sentenced to 25 years imprisonment by an Accra Circuit Court for robbery.
The convict, Eric Asamoah allegedly robbed a female student of one Nokia XL mobile phone, and a travelling bag valued at GH¢700 and GH¢60 respectively as well as her personal items.
The convict, after the robbery, raped the victim who was three months pregnant.
Delivering the judgement, the court, presided over by Aboagye Tandoh, said he took into consideration the plea for mitigation and the number of months Asamoah spent in custody.
Presenting the fact of the case, the prosecution said, the complainant, is a student, while the convict is a labourer.
Prosecuting Chief Inspector E. Afful said that at about 9:30 p.m., on August 18, 2015, the complainant alighted at Pokuase bus stop after closing from school, and suddenly, the convict, who was standing opposite the road, started monitoring her movement.
Prosecution said when the victim branched to a feeder road leading to her home, the convict followed her, pulled out a knife and ordered her to stop, and ordered the complainant to surrender her hand bag and mobile phone, which she obliged.
The court heard that after the student surrendered the items, the convict raped her.
Four days after, the husband of the victim made a call on her phone.
He feigned having found money which belonged to the owner of the phone, and wanted to hand it over.
The prosecution said, the victim’s husband and the convict met the following day at Ofankor for the transaction, and he was arrested.
