La Dadekotopon tackles sanitation

As part of efforts to address sanitation issues in the assembly, the La Dadekotopon Municpal Assembly (LaDMA) will on Saturday commence a clean-up exercise programme dubbed “Let’s clean La, get involved.”

The programme seeks to mobilise community members within the various electoral areas in the assembly to carry out sanitation exercises every week to keep the assembly clean and healthy.

This was disclosed by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of LaDMA, Mr Solomon Kotey Nikoi at the Meet the Press series for Metropolitan Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) yesterday, in Accra.

The event, initiated by the Ministry of Information sought to give all assemblies the opportunity to disseminate information on development activities in the municipality and to receive feedbacks from the citizenry.

It was under the theme, “Development Communication for the people of La.”

According to Mr Nikoi, one of the critical development issues confronting LaDMA was the management of sanitation saying, “the assembly is doing a lot in the management of both solid and liquid waste.

He admitted that much had not been achieved with regards to sanitation hence, members of the communities would be equipped with the necessary tools to enable them participate effectively under the new programme.

Mr Nikoi mentioned the renovation of public toilets, monitoring and arresting of open defecators, purchase of tools and chemicals for clean-up exercises and the construction of fence wall around the La Public Cemetery as other interventions towards the improvement of sanitation.

In relation to revenue and expenditure performance, he said, at the end of September this year, the assembly had mobilised total revenue of GH₵13,594,643.67.

This, according to Mr Nikoi included GH₵7,172,926.17 from the central government, GH₵1,120,219.83 from donors and GH₵5,301,497.63 from internally generated fund.

“Our total expenditure stood at GH₵15,580,393.51 in 2018 and GH₵10,604,747.02 at the end of September, 2019,” he added.

In agriculture, Mr Nikoi indicated that, 73 farmers had been registered under the Planting for Foods and Jobs programme within the municipality which include 66 males and seven females.

“These registered farmers are into the cultivation of vegetable and maize and had been educated and sensitised on the control and management of Fall Army Worms (FAW),” he said.

In addition, Mr Nikoi stated that, more than 1,100 household toilets had been constructed in the household toilet component under the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA) project.

He mentioned flooding due to absence of drains and choked drains, ineffective land use, planning and implementation, teenage pregnancy, drug abuse, gambling, unauthorised activities on roads such as funerals and unnecessary blocking of roads as some development challenges of the municipality.
