A cocktail event will be held at the forecourt of the African University College of Communication (AUCC), in Accra today, as part of activities to celebrate the birthday of Ghana’s founding President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
September 21, has been set aside as a public holiday to observe the birth of Ghana’s first President.
Dubbed, ‘KWAME NKRUMAH @ 107’, the event, which has been timed for the eve of the 107th anniversary of the birth of President Nkrumah, commence at 5:00 p.m. according to a release issued by the Board of Governors of the Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah African Genius Awards in 2014, signed by the Executive Director Enimil Ashong.
While honouring the memory of the great Pan Africanist of all time and Africa’s Man of the Millennium, the ‘KWAME NKRUMAH @ 107’ cocktail event is also to afford an opportunity for recipients of the maiden African Genius Awards in 2014 to interact with a cross section of the society.
The recipients are Dr Ave Kludze, first African to command a spacecraft in orbit, Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng, the renowned heart surgeon, Mrs Kate Quartey-Papafio, CEO of Reroy Group, De Roy Ebo Taylor (Music), Rev. Dr. Chris Hesse (Drama) and Professor Konotey Ahulu, the Ghanaian who has achieved world renown for his work in sickle cell anaemia.
Under the chairmanship of Nana Kobina Nketsia V, Omanhen of Essikado and Grand Patron of the African Genius Awards, the evening’s main speaker is Professor Kofi Asare Opoku, immediate past Chair of the Kwabena Nketia Centre for Africana Studies at AUCC.
His topic is, ‘STEPPING ON A STONE: NKRUMAH AND THE AFRICAN GENIUS’. Professor Asare Opoku has also taught at Lafayette College (Easton, Pennsylvania); Queens College (New York); University of Calabar (Nigeria) and University of Northern Carolina State University at Raleigh
The Board Chair of the scheme, Honourable Kojo Yankah, will launch the next edition of the Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah African Genius Awards slated for 2017.
Among personalities expected at the cocktail are Professor Francis Nkrumah, former Director of Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research and son of the late first President, He will be there with his siblings, Samia Yaaba Nkrumah and Dr Sekou Nkrumah, the Chief of Staff, Ministers of State and noted Nkrumahists.
Also expected are Government officials, the Legislature, flag-bearers and executives of the various political parties, Nkrumahists, Diplomatic Community, the Labour Movement and youth groups.
