Two market fires in as many
This is a matter of great concern to the entire nation.
The Ghanaian Times is highly worried because fingers are being pointed at arsonists.
The Ghana National Fires Service (GNFS) and the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), two major institutions in Kumasi, are not ruling out arson in the double inferno that swept through the markets during the Easter holidays, leaving the public with more questions than answers.
Both the Regional Commander Assistant Chief Fire Office, Joshua Nguah and the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Osei Assibey Antwi, said that the incidents pointed to possible arson.
“We cannot rule out arson, they unanimously said in an interview with journalists in Kumasi.
We have no reason to doubt them because they are competent authorities who considered a number of factors before making that pronouncement.
We call for a thorough investigation into the incident as quickly as possible so that we know what exactly caused the fire.
We are alarmed that two successive fires can occur in two major markets in Kumasi at a time government is building markets for traders with scarce resources.
It is, therefore, painful that some will be razed by fire which will require rebuilding with more funds.
It is, indeed, a worrying development which should be probed and anyone found culpably, punished severely.
On a broader note, arsonists are also a threat to national security as no one knows their next target.
We recall in this country when several markets were torched and goods amounting to several millions of cedis were consumed by flames.
Traders in those markets had to suffer because they lost their wares.
The traders at the Central and Asafo markets are to suffer similarly.
