Kufuor decorated with Liberia’s highest award

President And Mrs. Bush Hold State Dinner For President Of GhanaFormer President John Agyekum Kufuor has been decorated with the highest national award of the Republic of Liberia, The Collar of State – Most Venerable Order of the Pioneers.

The award was in recognition of the former President’s sterling role in bringing the bloody civil war that ravaged the West African country to end.

Under the auspices of former President Kufuor as the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the Accra Peace Accord, the last of many peace accords to end the 14-year civil war was signed.

On the occasion of the observance of the 171th National Flag Day which marked the 15th anniversary of the signing of the Accra Accord in Monrovia on Friday, the Liberian President, George Manneh Weah, extolled former President Kufuor’s leadership qualities whiles conferring on him the award.

“Under President Kufuor’s ingenious leadership, marked socio-economic development was recorded in Ghana; notably, pioneering of the National Health Insurance Scheme which benefited more than 11 million Ghanaians; construction and operationalisation of more than 200  hospitals and clinics; introduction of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme which provides cash transfers to poor households in the country among others.

“As President of Ghana and Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, you oversaw the Liberian peace efforts and coordinated with parties to the Liberian conflict culminating in the signing of the Comprehensive peace agreement which laid the roadmap for the successful restoration of peace and stability” a citation read by President Weah.

The government and people of Liberia, President Weah added “owe you [President Kufuor] a debt of gratitude for the sustained fraternal bond of friendship you exhibited; your continued positive role in promoting peace and development in Liberia has won for you a special place in the hearts of Liberians.”

Former President Kufuor, on his part thanked President Weah and the Liberian people for recognising his efforts to help the country overcome the brutal civil war.

He was hopeful the peace which had returned to Liberia would be a lasting one and President Weah and his government would deliver the socio-economic development that Liberians yearn for to bring smiles on their faces.

Others who were honoured on the night were former Arsenal Manager, Arsene Wenger, who received the award of Knight Grand Commander, Humane Order of African Redemption, Togolese senior national team manager, Claude Le Roy, Knight Commander Humane Order of African Redemption.

The rest are Alhaji Frank Jerico Nagbe and Mr. Dominic Vava George, former Coaches of the Liberian senior national team and Ms. Gbour S. Wilson, a basketball icon who all picked the Commander, Star of Africa awards.
