Kuapa Kokoo Limited purchased a total of 822,121 cocoa bags in the 2016/17 season, representing 51,382.56 metric tons.

The company has been able to achieve 99 per cent of its 2017/18 target of 1,120,000 cocoa bags by purchasing 945,544 bags of cocoa representing 59,096 metric tons from its members as of August this year.

Its market share has increased from 4.2 per cent to 7 per cent and moved from Licensed Buying Company (LBC) grade 12th to 5th.

Mr Samuel Adimado, Managing Director of the company who disclosed this at a press soiree here, on Friday said there was the likelihood of exceeding the target by the close of 2018.

In August, this year Kuapa Kokoo, he indicated, employed 60 graduates bringing the total of graduates employed by the company to 400.

The President of the Kuapa Kokoo Farmers Union (KKFU), Fatima Ali, lauded the company’s teleAgric Centre which would leverage on technology for enhanced extensions services by improving upon the knowledge base of KKFU members on new agricultural technologies and techniques as well as provide timely information to farmers on the weather, farm inputs and market.

She said plans were afoot to create a toll free hotline call service to attend to the needs of farmers and encourage access to head office and improve agricultural information sharing.

Touching on the gender and livelihood of the cocoa farmers, Treasurer of the KKFU, Cecilia Appianim, mentioned that 220 women have been trained in employable skills including soap making, batik tie and dye, pastries.

Mr Sampson Cobbina, assistant treasurer of KKFU said the company had been providing cocoa and tree seedling to farmers as part of the Union’s support for rehabilitation, intensification and reforestation of their farms.

He said the system provides training and monitoring to farmers on good agricultural, environment and social practices to enhance farmer professionalism and compliant with certification standards.
