Kotoko slip past Liberty

AHMED Toure’s under a minute goal was all that Kumasi Asante Kotoko needed to silence well-drilled Liberty professionals in their 12th week First Capital Plus premiership played at the Baba Yara stadium, yesterday.

It was quite a beautiful afternoon as both teams exhibited their football prowess to the admiration of the fans who thronged the stadium as a result of an “operation fill the stands for coach David Duncan”, launched by the CEO of the red army, Opoku nti.

Kotoko started the game on a fast note and when Michael Akuffo picked a loose ball and raced deep into the vital area of liberty where there was the likelihood of a goal.

Akuffo neatly sent a pass to on rushing Toure who hammered the ball past keeper Kwaku Stephen in post when the game was just about 30 seconds old.

Unperturbed, the visitors accepted the challenge and pushed more men forward which saw speedster,Taminu Muntari nearly cancelling the lead but his shot was too feeble to beat the keeper in the 33rd minute.

Liberty took advantage of kotoko’s reduced power in the second half and sent the game to their half but poor final delivery robbed them with Muntari and Kennedy Ashia being the worst culprits.

The inclusion of Latif Blessing changed the game pattern as the diminutive player was a thorn in the kotoko’s rear.

He moved dangerously in the 80th minute but watched his final delivery curved off the bar to the relief of the reds.

The pressure was too much for the hosts who now resorted to delay tactics, and when the whistle went off it was all joy for the homesters.

At Sunyani, struggling Brong Ahafo United halted leaders AshantiGold in their tracks after beating them 1-0 in the Ghana Premier League at the Coronation Park in Sunyani.

The victory was a statement of the Apostles superiority over AshantiGold in the Ghanaian top-flight.

United are still languishing in the relegation zone despite the win but AshantiGold have had their lead at the top of the table slashed down to three points.

In their bid to escape relegation, they needed the maximum points against an impressive AshantiGold side but Serlom Gerardo struck the only goal of the game to win the match for United.

For Bashir Hayford and his men it means they have still not managed to overpower teams from the Brong Ahafo region with United’s recent victory over them.

Gerardo’s goal came early in the second-half following an early pressure mounted by United.
