Koala Fined For Selling Expired Goods

koalaTHE La Sanitation and Motor Court has fined the Koala Shopping Centre at Osu, GH¢9,600 for selling expired goods to the public.

The Centre was also charged for keeping harmful objects on its premises and discharging human excreta into a public drain.

They pleaded guilty to the offences and the court, presided over by Emilia Abrokwah, imposed the fine and cautioned them not to sell unwholesome products to the public.

Prosecuting, the Chief Environmental officer   of the La   Dadekoptopon Municipal Assembly, Paul Agbagba, told the court that on October 13, a team from the assembly went on routine inspection within the metropolis and bumped into the nuisance created by the shopping centre.

When the team probed further, it emerged that apart from the huge refuse on its premises, Koala was also selling unwholesome products to the public.

The inspection also revealed that Koala had connected its septic tank to a public drain and discharging faecal matter into it.

A court summons was served on the management of Koala, who at their first appearance in court entered, a plea of not guilty but later changed it to guilty.

He noted that the shopping centre’s emptying its septic tank into a public drain was a catalyst for the cholera epidemic in the metropolis, saying the fine would serve as a deterrent for others.

Mr. Agbagba assured residents of the assembly’s commitment to maintaining environmental standards in the municipality.
