Knowing Oneself Reveals Man’s Unlimited Possibilities

BibleMost Christians struggle literally to achieve a good life through relentless prayer and hard work. Excessive pressure is, thus, brought upon God for His kind personal intervention. The Reason being the belief that we are Christians and, therefore, feel entitled to the best of all the good God has provided. In spite of this, we swim in abject poverty despite our best efforts.

Ignorant of who a Christian is and what is required of him/her, we are not guided in our actions and behaviours. Most of us, therefore, desire to have whatever we want to have in life by whatever means possible and do whatever we want to do, no matter what.

If this is not a very bad and dangerous policy for a Christian to live by, then I do not know what it is. This, without doubt, accounts for the unusually very high level of moral depravity, sinful behaviours in our churches and unprecedented corruption in our public work places.
Because of this ignorance, we choose the easier path by eagerly substituting good deeds and behaviours with exaggerated appetite for prayer. I can vouch that there are no citizens of any country who pray more than Ghanaians.

But what is the definition of prayer and who is a Christian? Mrs. Mary Baker Eddy, the Leader and Founder of Christian Science and author of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, which is the text book  for all Christian scientists the world over, defines prayer simply and unambiguously in her book “the habitual struggle to be always good is unceasing prayer”.

This, I am convinced is the only prayer God gladly respond to speedily. Prayer is action and action rather than verbosity merely. Should we pray this way there would be no cheating, violence, sinning, corruption, armed robbery and immorality.

The Christian consciously and consistently try daily to please and obey the voice of God in all that he does, no matter at what cost to him. And we do have biblical examples of men who perished violently because they preferred to die obeying God to living and offending Him.

John the Baptist was beheaded because he defended what was right by pointing out wrong doings. He spoke against King Herod marrying Herodias, his brother’s wife (Mark 6:17) and the three Hebrew friends were cast into the Babylonian burning fiery furnace, because they refused to worship any other God.

The Christian struggles really hard daily to express much of the divine nature of God. He is patient, honest, truthful and diligent in all that he does, he is so careful that he does not offend God; he is loving, forgiving, compassionate and kind to all manner of people.
Expressing these attributes is the only credible way of worshiping God. This activity cannot, however, be circumscribed or confined to a church, temple or mosque because God is spirit and is everywhere and must be worshipped 24 hours daily.

This is not to play down the importance of these orthodox places of worship. We go to these places where we learn a lot from sermons that are delivered and these enrich our knowledge of God and teach us how best we can worship Him.

Of the Christian, the psalmist has stated, “he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water that bringeth forth his fruit in his season, his leaf also shall not, wither and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper”Ps1:3. Originally this is man’s destiny. Whether one achieves this or not is not God’s business because God has given man everything he needs in order to be able to achieve his aims in life.

not Jesus confirmed this view when he once stated, “Be ye, therefore perfect even as your father which is in heaven is perfect”? Man as a child of God, therefore, dares not be poor under divine law.

For instance, no mortal born of a woman under the sun was as prosperous as father Abraham was apart from King Solomon. Why, because although Abraham is a child of God as we all are, he lived in total obedience to God.

The Christian needs not struggle in order to survive as this is not according to divine will. If we obey his voice then we shall prove in our individual experiences what Mrs. Eddy has stated in her book S and H 494 “DIVINE LOVE (GOD) ALWAYS HAS MET AND ALWAYS WILL MEET EVERY HUMAN NEED” and confirmed by the Psalmist.

Now this is what Mary Baker Eddy has stated regarding the practice of Christian science, “Christian Science goes to the bottom of mental action to reveal the theodicy which indicates the rightness of all divine actions as the emanation of divine Mind (God) and the consequent wrongness of the opposite so-called actions-evil, occultism, mesmerism, animal magnetism and hypnotism.”
Preachings I have heard over the years clearly put the responsibility for man’s progress in life firmly at the door step of God. But this is at variance with scripture which affirms in Eccl 1:14 that, “whatsoever God doeth it shall be forever, nothing can be put to it or anything taken from it”. This confirms the fact conclusively that man was made so perfect and complete that he does not need reliance on God or anybody for him to achieve whatever he wants to. What we most need is the prayer of fervent desire for growth in grace expressed in patience, meekness, love and good deeds.

To keep the commandments of our master and follow his example is our proper debt to him and the only worthy evidence of our gratitude for all that he has done. The importance of self-knowledge cannot be overemphasised. God once said I am the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. The consciousness and conviction of His allness is source of God’s enormous unsurpassed power.

It is beneficial for one to answer the question truthfully, “am I a true Christian and what makes me a true Christian”? If the answer one gets is positive will indicate the level of your closeness to God and the infinite possibilities that are before you in terms of scientific and spiritual demonstrations.

From then on, you will be filled with great power and boldness and you will not fear to attempt any tasks that will bless mankind. With the knowledge and consciousness that God is all the time with him because he had a perfect relationship with Him and that He is ready and willing to support whatever he did that glorified his name, David at that tender age of 15 or so, challenged Goliath to a duel and defeated him.

Also an ordinary mortal like Joshua caused the sun not to move and it obeyed. Many unbelievable feats were achieved by prophets and men of God of old, all based on the knowledge of their perfect unbroken and indestructible relationship with God. This gave them extraordinary power, courage and ability to act in God’s name.

How frequent does your conscience prick you or violently rebel against you from within for a decision taken or an act by you? How much peace of mind do you have left for you after such unseen confrontations? This does not augur well for a Christian and one who longs to be close to God. At best this situation will confirm you in the unfavourable situation in which you find yourself and ably distance you from the progress you so desperately wish for.

In our churches we talk about sin casually but dwell much on seeking and finding God through prayer in resolving prosperity, passport and visa issues.

I am not sure whether preachers do not know that sin is the root cause of every single human problem on the face of this earth. What is expected of churches is a serious, relentless, consistent and regular public religious campaigns to assist people through prayer and education to gain the power over sin in themselves and others.

This is the only way we shall resume our original status as God’s children. My personal view, however, is that the world will by far be better off without sin than a world where prayer and sin reign. This is the choice that confronts the world today. If we will pray and let our lives attest to the sincerity of our prayer that will be fine, otherwise my choice remains unchanged.

The story is told of a young man, who not long ago, visited the passport office with a completed application form in the quest for a passport. On reaching there he met a large number of enthusiastic people with the same mission as his.

He observed the way moneys changed hands freely and was crest fallen. As an avowed young religionist he has always condemned the practice of influencing people as a mean of achieving an objective and therefore refused to indulge in the practice.

He found a quiet place somewhere and poured his heart out in an honest passionate prayer to God, who is the source of all good. Thereafter, he went to the office and handed over his completed form and left without exchanging a single word with anybody.

Not long after, he received a notification from the passport office which invited him to report to collect the processed document. Refusing to give bribe on Christian principles means that the young avowed Christian was leaning on God and this is what Mrs. Eddy has stated in S & H “TO THOSE LEANING ON THE SUSTAINING INFINITE TODAY IS BIG WITH BLESSINGS.”
Who says God does not answer prayer? When you pray and get no favourable results, check your relationship with sin.

If the relationship between you is too cordial try to do something about it as you have God-derived power to do so in order to improve relationship with God. There is no other way of resolving problems than this. – John Manful
