K’dua Zongo youth clash with soldiers

A Cross-section of youth at Koforidua Zongo in the Eastern Region, yesterday clashed with some  soldiers over the mounting of a new security communication mast in the community.

According to the youth, the land was not appropriate for mounting a mast because it was close to a clinic and had been earmarked for the building of a Kindergarten school block for the Zongo community.

“The land was earmarked for a school, not a mast. We have a clinic here and you want to build a mast here? We don’t want it here,” one youth said.

The residents tried to stop the Soldiers who went to mount the mast at around 7am, but the military men were in no mood for any resistance and succeeded in mounting the mast.

Some of the youth accused their chiefs and elders of colluding with the “powers that be” to mount the mast, claiming the chiefs had told the police to arrest any youth who attempted to stop the project.

“The police are here to guard the project as it goes on and they say some chiefs in this community have told them to arrest us. We too, we won’t go. We are ready to face them,” another angry youth said.

However, the soldiers succeeded in erecting the mast.
