Former Black Stars defender, John Paintsil, was on Tuesday, arrested for allegedly stealing his wife’s vehicle and assaulting two police officers.

The former Fulham star was invited by the East Legon police over a complaint filed by his wife, Richlove Paintsil that he had stolen her vehicle.

According to the police, the footballer became angry during interrogation, and hit the District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Emmanuel Basintale, and also pushed the investigator.

He was in police custody as at the time of filing this report, and expected to be processed for court today.

ASP Afia Tenge, Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police Command, who confirmed the incident, said a report was made against Paintsil by Richlove for stealing her car, and the police as part of their investigations, needed to invite both parties to enable them to commence investigation.

“There was a meeting that was supposed to be held between the two parties and in the cause of the meeting, we realised that John Painstil was failing to co-operate and it was at this point that the District Commander ordered that we arrest him and also take a statement from him.”

She said during that process, Paintsil “got furious and even hit the District Commander in the eye”.

Paintsil, however, explained that Richlove changed the documents to one of his vehicles without his knowledge, which was the cause of their disagreement.

It is recalled that in February, 2013, police investigated a complaint that the defender had assaulted his wife.

Richlove denied she was assaulted by her husband, following a misunderstanding at their Trassaco House.

She was reported to have jumped the wall of their building to a next door neighbour for protection.

ASP Tenge dismissed rumours the Richlove had been assaulted, emphasising that the only report filed was the theft of the car which the police had begun to investigate.
