Irate youth hold 3 cops hostage

Scores of youth at Nkroful, in the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis of the Western Region, on Sunday afternoon, held three policemen hostage at the chief’s palace and caused violent commotion in the community.

The action of the youth followed a meeting between the regent of the community, Harry Techie Menson with a delegation from Butumagyebu.

The mob, according to the police, rampaged and vandalised the palace, and when the regent called for protection, they held the  policemen hostage.

It took reinforcement from the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team for the policemen to be rescued.

The Ghanaian Times is yet to know the reason for the youth’s action.

Meanwhile, two suspects namely Kweku Mensah, 30, and Elizabeth Nyewan, 53, had been arrested and are in police custody assisting the police in their investigations.

Briefing the GhanaianTimes, the Police Public Relations Officer (PRO),Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Olivia EwurabenaAdiku said, at about 2.30pm, on Sunday, the regent of Nkroful, in Takoradi, Harry Tachie-Meson, met at the chief’s palace to discuss issues with  some people of Butamagyebu.

She said, whilst the meeting was in progress, Kweku Mensah alias Kweku Ningo,   attacked the delegates and regent in the palace with stones.

One Kofi Biney, from the chief’s palace, she added, called the Kojokrom police who despatched Detective Inspector Kpobi and two other policemen to the scene and arrested Kweku Mensah.

According to ASP Adiku, the youth, numbering about 100, prevented the police team from arresting the suspect, attacked and held them hostage, saying that “it took the SWAT team and officers from Takoradi Central Police Station to free the policemen.”
