A Director of Inter Allies football club, Mr. Joe Justus Ayivor, last Friday evening visited destitute boxer, Prince Amartey at his home in the slums of Ho-Hliha and donated an undisclosed amount of money to him.
Mr Ayivor said that Amartey’s patriotic credentials preceded him always in his heyday.
“Even as children, we could tell that Amartey loved his country more than anything else”, he said.
It is, therefore, pathetic to hear that that in his 70s, the boxing hero who won the bronze for Ghana in the middleweight division at 1974 Munich Olympic Games, who cannot walk properly any longer, now works as sweeper at a private health facility to survive”, said Mr. Ayivor in an emotional tone.
During the visit, it emerged that Amartey now sleeps in darkness because he cannot afford to buy electricity units.
Mr. Ayivor added his voice to the call on government to intervene to rehabilitate the former pugilist before he dies on his feet.
