Insurance cover for national service personnel launched in Accra

An insurance cover for all national service personnel within the country was yesterday launched at the National Service Secretariat in Accra.

The insurance package from the GLICO Life covers death, injury, medical and other complimentary packages for national service personnel during the service period.

Whilst service personnel would be expected to pay a premium of GH¢15.00 per month, GLICO Life was expected to pay GH¢15,000 to the next of kin upon death with permanent disability also attracting GH¢15,000.

However, in the event of personnel becoming temporary disabled, so that he would not be able to engage in national service for a period not less than one month due to accidental injury, GLICO Life would pay the person GH¢3,000.

Launching the policy, Alhaji Mustapha Ussif, the acting Executive Director of the NSS said the package came with other complimentaries to support national service personnel on the field.

He said the initiative was part of a package to cater for the welfare of personnel, adding that the insurance policy was part of a resolution adapted by the National Service Personnel Association (NASPA) at its special congress in Kumasi this year.

Alhaji Ussif said the NSS had earlier launched the, “NSS life starter pack” initiative in partnership with Hisense to provide an opportunity for service personnel to acquire basic home appliances and pay in installments.

He said the scheme would continue to roll out packages that would significantly impact on the lives of national service personnel in order to improve their wellbeing.

Mr Forkuo Kyei, Managing Director of GLICO Life said the package was to boost the confidence of personnel to voluntarily serve in all corners of the country.

He said apart from road traffic accidents, some of these service personnel have suffered domestic and industrial accidents, which have resulted in various degrees of disabilities and in some cases death.

He said it was for this reason that NASPA collaborated with GLICO Life and the NSS to introduce a Group Life Insurance Scheme for all personnel in the country.
