Real Upper Ladies’ Berikisu Issahaku has been called in to replace Ghana U-17 goalkeeper Martha Annan Koffie who has been ruled out of the FIFA U-17 Women World Cup due to injury.
Martha who was highly tipped to keep the post for Ghana at the World Cup opener against Japan, suffered an injury to her knee during the team’s training session on Monday.
Initial checks from the medical team indicates that the injury could take up to three weeks to heal, ruling the Bafana Ladies goalkeeper out of the tournament which will be staged from September 30 – October 21.
Berikisu Issahaku joined the team in Jordan on Wednesday afternoon where she took part in preparations for the opening group game.
Speaking on the injury, Management Committee Chairman, Mr. Augustine Asante says they are confident any of the two goalkeepers will be ready to keep the post for Ghana when given the nod by coach Evans Adotey.
“Somehow it will affect us but we will keep faith with the goalkeepers who are available. From what I see in training, I believe who ever comes in will put up a good performance for the team”, Mr. Asante told Ghanafa.org.
The injured goalkeeper is expected to return to Ghana today.
