The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr David Asante-Apeatu, has directed the Central Regional Police Command to speed up investigations into the shooting and killing of one Richard Aheheto, 36, at Akweley in Kasoa in the Central Region.
The IGP made the call in a statement issued and signed by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Simon Tenkuu, for the Director-General of Police Public Affairs, sighted by the Ghanaian Times.
The statement said investigation conducted so far showed that the police received a distress call from the Emergency Command Centre on March 31, at about 8:30p.m, to respond to attack against some people at a graduation ceremony for a hairdresser at Akweley.
It indicated that a patrol team was dispatched to restore order at Akweley, resulting in the arrest of two suspects amidst the pelting of stones and objects at the patrol team.
The statement said in the process of arrest, the mob assaulted a police officer, who sustained serious injuries and fell unconscious.
‘’While the officer was being assaulted, others tried to disarm him causing him to fire a shot, which hit the deceased, Aheheto, who was reportedly holding the muzzle of the rifle at the time,” it said.
It said said both Aheheto and the injured police officer were rushed by the patrol team to the hospital for treatment, but the deceased was pronounced dead.
The statement warned any person or persons with the intent to cause further disturbances, to desist from that, and assured the public that thorough investigations would be conducted into the incident, and perpetrators brought to book.
