Ho Polytechnic Holds Congregation

Dr AfunThe Ho Polytechnic has held its 13th congregation, at which 1,079 students were awarded the Higher National Diploma and Bache-lor’s Degrees in their various fields of study.

The chairman of the polytechnic’s Governing Council, Dr Anthony A. Adimado, expressed his pleasure with them for completing their studies, and assured that the polytechnic would be a centre of excellence, in technological and professional training.

The rector, Dr Victor Jakpasu Afun, acknowledged the staff for their good works and dedication, which have contributed to the growth of the polytechnic.

He disclosed that the Ghana Skills Development Initiative (GSDI), in collaboration with the Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (COTVET), has selected Ho Polytechnic and 16 other institutions in the country, to participate in the GSDI pilot project, to improve apprenticeship training in the informal sector, in the Volta Region, through a competency-based training approach.

The programme will focus on dress-making, tailoring, hairdressing, electronics, auto repairs and welding.
Dr Afun bemoaned the infras-tructural challenges facing the polytechnic, revealing that it has only two lecture halls, two halls of residence for students; and a few bungalows for the over 400 members of staff.

He hinted that work would soon start on a five-storey classroom block for the Faculty of Engineering.
The guest of honour, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the Minister of Education, reiterated government’s commitment to polytechnic education in the country, and disclosed that, plans are underway to transform some polytechnics into technical universities, and urged the lecturers to give of their best to students in the classroom.

She hinted of the setting up of a national research fund for all tertiary institutions, to enable their lecturers and researchers to undertake effective researches to expand the frontiers of knowledge in the country.

Prof Opoku-Agyemang admonished the graduates to make good use of the qualification, wherever they may be posted to.- Kafui Gati, Ho
