Hit-And-Run Driver Kills Pupil, Injures 2

LEG2A hit-and-run driver on Saturday knocked down and killed a Class Six pupil, Godsway Brahini of the Padmore Preparatory School at the Trinity Junction, East Legon in Accra.

Adams Abdallah Najinudeen, 11, and Dorsen Robert, 10, also Class Six pupils of the same school, sustained injuries and are receiving treatment at the University of Ghana Hospital.

The victims, together with other colleagues, went on an excursion at the Children’s Park and on their return, alighted at Bawaleshie, and were crossing the road when they were knocked down by a speeding driver.

Briefing The Ghanaian Times, the Legon District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Emmanuel Basintali, said the incident happened at about 7 p.m. when the children returned from the excursion.

He said, eye-witnesses indicated that the deceased together with the other victims, alighted from the school bus, and were crossing the road when a speeding Tundra Pick-up hit them.

“The street lights were not functioning so the road was dark, when the car knocked the children. The driver, believed to be a woman, got down to check what happened. But when she saw that she had knocked the children, she went back into the vehicle and drove off,” he said.

DSP Basintali assured that every effort was being made to apprehend the perpetrator.

“We have started serious investigations to arrest the driver for driving recklessly, hitting the children and running away,” he said.

The father of the deceased, Gabriel Brahini, told The Ghanaian Times that his son left home around 6 a.m. to join the school bus together with his colleagues, adding that when they realised he was not returning home from the excursion, he went to the school, but was told the bus had already brought them back.

He said on his way home, he was told that a car had knocked down and killed some school children. “When I heard the news, I rushed to the hospital, but I was told my son had died.”
