WHAT was purported to be a discussion to sharpen rough edges in the team nearly turned nasty when newly signed-on coach of Accra Hearts of Oak, Kenichi Yatsuhatsi and Team Manager, Sabahn Quaye clashed and ‘bad-mouthed’ each other in front of members of the playing body and technical team of the premier club on Monday.
Returning from a 4-1 bashing in the hands of WAFA, a premier league side in an off-season friendly over the weekend, Monday’s training session was meant to get players to do light training while the technical team discusses the strength and weaknesses of the team.
But that was not meant to be as a bust-up between Coach Kenichi and Team Manager, Sabahn Quaye caused a momentary disruption of the day’s activities.
Quaye and Kenichi freely engaged each other in a war of words following a misunderstanding over how the event should be conducted and how players should be addressed.
Quaye was harshly interrupted by his head coach after being given permission to speak to the players following their return from the disappointing WAFA defeat.
Coach Kenichi was very critical of the performance of his players and expected the rest of the members of his technical team to tow a similar line in their turns to speak to the players.
But a Ghanasoccernet account suggested that Sabahn departed from this, rather urging the players to put behind the disappointing result as it was a mere friendly.
That approach angered Kenichi who furiously instructed Sabahn to ‘shut up’ while belittling his influence on the team as a mere ‘logistics officer’.
Sabahn, who is not easily cowed responded in equal measure as the other members of the technical team and players stepped in to break up the war of words between the two.
This is the second altercation to have ensued between the two since the appointment of Coach Kenichi Yatsuhashi.
Attempts were made to re-assign Sabahn Quaye as a logistics officer.
These attempts, however, was rumoured to be initiated by Managing Director, Gerald Ankrah, who apparently has a bone to pick with the Team Manager.
Quaye returned to the Hearts of Oak bench last year after having a brief stint at Liberty Professionals.
He is, however, considered an extremely powerful and an untouchable whenever there is a change in technical direction of the club.
However, Managing Director of the club, Gerard Ankrah has played down the effect of the fracas between the two top officials of the club, insisting it would be dealt with at the managerial level.
Reacting to a number of issues on Accra based Asempa FM yesterday, Mr Kenichi denied allegations that his actions has turned Quaye against the coach who was hired recently, admitting that there are serious issues the club must find solutions to stage a big challenge for the upcoming season.
