Gunmen attack police, seize weapons at Kakpayili

Some unidentified gunmen on Monday attacked three police personnel of the Operation Calm Life, and took away their weapons at Kakpayili, a suburb of Tamale, in the Northern region.

The incident is said to have occurred between the 9:00 and 10: 00 p.m. when the police were deployed to help curb the frequent armed robbery cases in the area.

The Northern Regional Police Public Relation Officer (PRO), Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mohammed Yussif Tanko, confirmed the attack to the Ghanaian Times, but could not give further details, except to say that the Criminal Investigation Department of the police was investigating the incident.

He appealed to the public to volunteer information that would lead to the arrest of the gunmen.

A resident of the suburb, who gave his name as Solisu Mustapha, told the Ghanaian Times yesterday that the unidentified gunmen in an unregistered saloon car, attacked the police at a check point, fired several shots, which compelled all the personnel to ran for their lives.

He claimed the police personnel left their weapons behind and took to their heels.

The residents suspected that the guns used by the unidentified gunmen were sophisticated as the shots sounded like that of AK 47 and G 3 rifles.
