GPCC calls on Pres Akufo Addo to disband vigilante groups

The Ghana Pentecostal Charismatic Council (GPCC), has called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to take practical steps to ensure that vigilante groups are disbanded within three months.

Subsequently, the council asked the government to legislate against future formation of “groups that are threats to the security and peace” in the country.

A statement issued on Friday, February 22, 2019, said the President’s directive for the two main parties, National Democratic Congress (NDC) and New Patriotic Party (NPP), to meet and end vigilantism, was commendable, but should not be left at “intention level”.

President Akufo-Addo in his State of the Nation Address last Thursday directed the NDC and NPP to meet over the issue or he would legislate against it.

This followed wide condemnation of activities of vigilante group affiliated to the two main parties and the threat they posed to the country’s security, especially in a led up to election 2020.

The GPCC urged religious leaders, traditional leaders, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders to be involved in the process leading to the disbanding of vigilante groups.

“As we await further action on this vigilante menace, GPCC is still committed to our campaign of disband within three months or be disowned,” the statement said.
