Gov’t To Support Poultry Farmers With Gh₵50 Million

Industrial-Chicken-CoopMr. Haruna Iddrisu, Minister of Trade and Industry, has said government would provide GH¢50 million to support the poultry industry.

He said the two-year support, spanning 2014 to 2015, is aimed at assisting farmers to increase production in the poultry industry.

Mr Iddrisu, who announced this at a stakeholder consultative meeting in Accra yesterday, said the government was committed to revitalizing the agriculture sector, through capacity building of farmers, to enable them apply technology to increase productivity.

The meeting that brought together representatives of the various poultry farmers association across the country, was at the instance of the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Food and Agriculture, to discuss concerns of poultry farmers.

He said as part of efforts to encourage the youth to venture into agriculture, two youth groups from the ten regions could access up to GH¢2.5 million from the fund to expand their businesses.

Mr Iddrisu said young female applicants could access up to GH¢1.5million from the fund while their male counterparts could be supported with GH¢1 million respectively.

He, however, said the fund could be accessible “after bankable business proposals by applicants are scrutinized.”

Mr. Iddrisu said government would take steps to reduce import of frozen chicken and rice into the country.
