The Minister of Youth and Sports, Dr. Mustapha Ahmed has disclosed that Ghana’s intends to bid for the 2019 All African Games competition.
“There have been calls from major stakeholders in the country to consider bidding for the right to host the All African Games. Since its inception 50 years ag,o I believe it’s about time Ghana also hosted it.”
The Minister made this disclosure yesterday when he launched Ghana’s participation in the competition at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) in Accra.
The competition which is slated for September 4-19, 2015 in Congo, Brazzaville would see 300 athletes from 16 sporting federations including Swimming, Table Tennis, Karate do, Volleyball and Basketball.
Mr. Ahmed assured of the preparedness and readiness of all the sporting federations that has qualified to compete in the competition.
“Based on the feedbacks receiving I believe that Ghana would perform better this year than what we did at the last All African Games. The National Sports Authority (NSA) has also assured me that the mistakes of Maputo would not be repeated.”
The Minister called on both the private and public sector to come on board to provide sponsorship package to support the various teams that would be competing in September.
“The government alone cannot support all the teams, so we are appealing to corporate Ghana to provide support. We would be organizing an event soon to make a formal appeal to them.”
He also noted that Ghana has accepted an invitation from Congo for the senior national team, the Black Stars to play a commemorative game to open a 60,000 capacity stadium before the commencement of the games.
The Chef de Mission, Mr. Saka Acquaye revealedd that 41 countries including Ghana have confirmed their participation in the competition.
He called on the various participating teams to work hard to double the laurels Ghana won at the 10th All African Games.
“As you prepare to go and represent Ghana in Congo come September I want you to have at the back of your mind that the 19 medals Ghana won four years ago wasn’t enough therefore this year would be different as you would all work very hard to win more medals for the country.”
Mean while, the International Games Committee for the Games will meet at the Media Centre today at 2pm
