GBF to host individual championship

The Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) has announced the hosting of a national individual boxing championship to be staged at the Accra Sports Stadium from September 4 – October 8, 2018.

Consequently, the Federation has asked regional representatives to prepare their respective teams to be registered for the championship.

Mr. George Lamptey, President of the Federation told the Times Sports the competition was aimed at recruiting talented boxers for the national team, the Black Bombers.

“We believe there are a lot of talented boxers outside of the national team. It was important we capture them on the database of the GBF so in the case where there is a need to replace a boxer, we will have one readily available.”

He reckons over 100 boxers would be in attendance.

Meanwhile, government has rewarded Jessie Lartey with a cash prize of $2,000 for winning bronze at the Commonwealth Games held in Australia this year.

The Acting Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Mr Majeed Bawa, who presented the cheque, urged him to be motivated by the gesture and strive to accomplish greater things for the country.
Lartey was Ghana’s only medalist at the Australia Games.
He was full of gratitude to government for not reneging on its promise and pledged to win gold at the next Olympics Games in 2020.
